Matt Millen going to NBC?

January 4th 2009 00:25
Matt Millen has kept a pretty low profile since he was fired earlier this season as General Manager of the Detroit Lions. I guess that is understandable since the Lions did set an NFL record by going 0-16 in 2008. But now it appears the great player (and sucky executive) is back in the public eye.

Matt Millen made an appearance on NBC, being interviewed by Dan Patrick, on “Football Night in America” fueling rumors that he is returning to broadcasting in 2009. It appears possible that Millen will be working for NBC next season especially if John Madden retires.

Matt Millen was really terrible as a General Manager of the Detroit Lions and helped run them into the ground. While he was a great player as a NFL Linebacker, his knowledge didn’t help him as a team executive. And that is a shame as I really like Matt and had hoped he would turn the Lions around. The Ford Family and the Detroit Lions caught some flack for hiring a broadcaster to fill their General Manager’s position.

However Matt Millen was an excellent NFL Broadcaster for Fox before taking that job with the Lions. He is well spoken and knowledgeable about pro football and can help fans understand the game. At the time he was with Fox he was my second favorite NFL commentator behind Dan Dierdorf among the former players doing that job.

Having played for three NFL teams in 12 seasons and winning Super Bowls with all of them, Millen knows his football. At least how to talk about it anyway, maybe not how to draft good players. I really hope Millen does return to NFL Broadcasting in some form and expect he will do well at whichever network hires him.

If John Madden does retire or isn’t retained by NBC, I expect Chris Collinsworth to replace him on Sunday Night Football. The former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver has already done some games when Madden didn’t want to fly to them. As we all know Chris loves to talk and does a good job whenever he gets the opportunity.

Chris Collinsworth going to the booth would leave a studio job open for Matt Millen and I think that is the direction that NBC would go. If John Madden is back next season, then NBC or one of the other networks should still hire Millen. There are too many ex players cough Emmitt Smith cough in broadcasting that are doing a poor job.

I could never figure WHY he was such a good player and broadcaster for FOX and then turned out to be such a bust with the Lions!!!

I think part of the reason he was a bust with the Lions started with the Joey Harrington pick. The old man, Ford, wanted Joey, Matt did not.

Also from what I heard, Matt's work ethic was null. During the week he was in PA, and would come back for the games on Sunday. The new Gm, Mayhew has been visiting colleges and watching games during the week.

I would like to see the Lions recover. I was a big fan of both Billy Sims and Barry Sanders.
