My Initial Thoughts on the 2009 NFL Draft
April 20th 2009 02:57
Hello Footballdogz.com readers...it is I, Robin Pottratz, your humble college football correspondent. I know that I have been away for a few months. I have been deep in study for the upcoming college football season...also there isn't as much off season news for college football as there is for the NFL...so I ran out of ideas to write about.
Now is the 2009 NFL draft. I am not informed enough to do a full mock draft, but I do have thoughts on various players as well as draft scenarios.
Here are just some thoughts:
1. Would taking Stafford number 1 be the best move for the Lions?
Truth be told, I don't know what the first step is for the Lions...they can only move up. There will be other quarterbacks...I think that I would give former Michigan State Spartan Drew Stanton a shot at QB and maybe take a shot at Sam Bradford next year. I would take either Jason Smith of Baylor or Eugene Monroe of Virginia. Both are offensive tackles...a routinely secure position to draft.
The Detroit Lions are notorious for bad draft decisions...and I believe taking Stafford will be a huge mistake...but I guess time will tell.
2. Mark Sanchez is the best QB in this draft:
It is all there in black and white. Sanchez played at a high level program, with a high level winning percentage, and has more big game experience than any other QB in the draft. Seattle will end up drafting him...and will groom him to be Hasselbeck's replacement...this is not Matt Leinart...this will work...mark my words.
3. Is there a bigger draft gamble than Michael Crabtree?
On the field, there is no better athlete in this draft pool than Michael Crabtree, the standout WR from Texas Tech. However, Crabtree has been cursed with a little word that starts with an F...fragile. He spent half of the year on the injured list in 2008...he has the potential to be a huge NFL star...if he stays healthy...otherwise he could ascend to the top 10 of all time draft busts.
4. Why are we shocked that an OT who is 6-4 and 330 pounds has fat on his body?
Andre Smith, the standout OT from Alabama slipped down the draft board when he ran the combine shirtless. This should not be a shock that an OT has a gut and man boobs. That doesn't take away from his physical strength and power which are his main assets. I think that whoever lands Smith is going to get an absolute steal.
5. Percy Harvin, Knowshon Moreno, and James Laurenitis are either at the bottom of the first round...or not in it at all.
How is this possible? A year ago, these three were easy top 10 picks. I honestly do not know. I think there was maybe a huge influx of talent...but I am just not sure. Beanie Wells, was injured for most of the year and he is at least mid 1st round. It wouldn't surprise me if one of these 3 snuck up to ahead of their mock draft slots.
Those are just some thoughts I have for now. If I think of any more nuggets of wisdom...I will be sure to post.
