NFL Playoff Preview Detroit Lions at New Orleans Saints
January 4th 2012 00:34
This is a preview of the NFC playoff game between the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints. The Lions have steadily improved over the last two seasons and as you can read here Matthew Stafford has arrived. The Saints had a huge season out of record setting Drew Brees and finished with a route of the Carolina Panthers.
In this playoff preview of the Lions at the Saints I will discuss what each team needs to do to win. I will also give my prediction for the winner of the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints playoff game.
The Detroit Lions come into the playoffs with the 4th best passing offense led by Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson. The running offense leaves a little bit to be desired as they rank 25th in the NFL. The Detroit Lions defense is a bit overrated and dirty. They rank 22nd against the run and 23rd against the pass.
The Lions will have to win a shootout against Drew Brees if they expect to upset the Saints in the playoffs. Detroit should at least try to run the ball but they have been ineffective at that. The fact that Calvin Johnson is the best wide receiver in the game and that the Saints did lose to the Rams, tells me the Lions at least have a shot against the Saints.
The New Orleans Saints are great at passing or running the football on offense. The Saints are first in passing and 6th in running the football. Drew Brees excels at spreading the ball around to a multitude of receivers. The Saints defense ranks only 25th against the pass but 12th at stopping the run.
The Saints just need to play their brand of football. If Drew Brees can avoid turnovers then the Lions defense won’t stop the Saints. However watch for Suh and company to try to knock Brees out of the game. The fact that a backup quarterback for the Packers torched the Lions shows how bad their pass defense is.
My prediction for the Detroit Lions at New Orleans Saints playoff game is a Saints win. I don’t think the Lions can slow Brees but I think they will make it an interesting game. New Orleans Saints defeat the Detroit Lions by the score of 31 to 27.
