NFL wants to extend season

June 17th 2010 23:49
The NFL is considering expanding their regular season from 16 to 18 games. Considering means they are going to do it but have not announced it yet. Money is the cause of the NFL wanting to add more regular season games of course.

As a football fan and of course as a sports writer who will make more money if there are more games, I support the NFL schedule enhancement. However I would like too see expanded rosters and an additional bye week.

The expanded rosters will be needed because there will be more injuries in an 18 week NFL season. The wear and tear on NFL players is bad enough that Peyton Manning and Ray Lewis both spoke out against extending the NFL regular season. The intended reduction of two preseason games will help avoid some injuries but not all. I just hope the players get more money for the two added regular season games.

A bigger NFL roster will also negate the loss of those two preseason games. Players who needed 4 preseason games to show their stuff to make a roster, may make the team now with expanded rosters.

Giving each NFL team two bye weeks will help negate the injuries of a longer NFL season. Another bye will also extend the actual season another week giving the NFL more revenue.

Chris McClain of WFNZ’s Mac Attack out of Charlotte North Carolina argued with his listeners today on the subject. Mac wants more games because the NFL is the best thing going in American sports. Some of his misguided callers said this would dilute the product and make the NFL stale and boring. I believe these were soccer geeks who never watch real sports and were listening to WFNZ in hopes of hearing World Cup news.

Remember the NFL has increased their games per season before. 12 games then 14 were played before the current 16 game schedule was implemented. Yes records will now be broken by players who play in more games than their predecessors but that is the nature of the beast.

I think more games adds to the injuries and contract values. Now, that will make the CBA even harder to come by. At this stage, the NFL cannot extend the season with no new CBA. The owners are simply too greedy. As far as the subject goes, I could care less how long the season is. Just give me some football!

By the way, how did you add the "Other Great Sites" on the sidebar?
