Not enough free games on TV?

October 30th 2008 00:45
I was driving home tonight and heard something that got my mind wondering. (wandering?)

A news report stated that some people are up in arms and have contacted their state representatives because not enough NFL games are on the open airwaves (networks) these days. I guess they're a little miffed because their team ends up on cable and there is no free alternative to see them.

It was evident that the NFL is only after money when they sold Monday Night Football to ESPN after it had been a staple on ABC for decades. True--the apple isn't falling far from the tree because ESPN and ABC are part of the same conglomerate but, how many people get free ESPN?

Some people have been put off since the advent of the NFL Network because fans have missed "their team" due to a lack of cable accessibility. I know this happened in Pittsburgh when the Steelers were playing last season but one of the local stations came to the rescue and carried a live feed of the game courtesy of the NFL Network.

Others hailed the NFL Network as another outlet, providing an early "fix" for NFL fans. Then came ESPN's entry to the NFL broadcasting field and things changed.

ESPN's presence was part of the NFL shake-up in all broadcasting. ABC dropped out of the NFL broadcasting game entirely, FOX had already picked picked up the NFC, the AFC had switched from NBC to CBS, and NBC started carrying Sunday night games.

Let me get personal here and say I really like my games and don't want to lose anything. However, let's get real and think about this in realistic terms. A game takes three hours or more to play. Do you have time to take nine hours on a Sunday to watch all the games on TV?????

Perhaps this is a delayed reaction to ESPN picking up Monday Night Football. If this is the case, not counting the NFL Network, this is only one game that has been lost, However, if that ONE game has implications on the playoff picture, I can definitely side with those missing their free games.

While I'm on a rant, let me throw out my NFL pet peeve. I REALLY don't like the rule stating a game must be broadcast locally if it's a sell-out even though the same network may be broadcasting a better game elsewhere. To be more exact--if I have to watch one more pointless Steelers-Bengals game I'm going to throw a shoe through my TV screen!

I am on cable and don't have NFL Network anymore and miss it. I used to have Direct TV and had it and the option for NFL Sunday Ticket which rocks by the way.

The NFL is the most popular sport right now and needs fans happy to keep it that way. I think that every person interested should be able to buy a team package. An affordable option for just their team and maybe say a $5 fee for any other games not in their market they want to buy.

My Dad has Direct TV. I like the NFL Network for the insight. It's gets a little overwhelming sometimes but you learn how to pick and choose.
