The Panthers earn a first week playoff bye
December 28th 2008 22:16
The Panthers earned a much needed bye in the 2008 NFL Playoffs and the number 2 seed. Drew Brees led the Saints roaring back in the 4th Quarter but the Panthers mounted a comeback of their own and won with 6 seconds left.
The Panthers need this bye to get healthy with their two starting defensive tackles and to work on better defense overall. Last week they gave up 300 yards to the Giants on the ground. This week almost 400 yards passing the Drew Brees, thus exposing that aspect of their defense as well.
What is making the Carolina Panthers a good team at this point is their offense. Jake Delhomme, who is coming off Tommy John Surgery, has picked up his game of late. Delhomme isn’t making mistakes and is finding Steve Smith when he needs to. However the two headed running monster of Williams and Stewart are the main reason the Panthers are being successful.
Getting a home game in the playoffs is also very important to the Carolina Panthers. They were the only team who went undefeated at home in the 2008 NFL Regular Season. But one thing does concern me about the bye.
The Panthers looked like one of the best teams in the NFL until their regular season bye. When they came back from that, they were not as sharp. I do think John Fox and the rest of the coaching staff will keep the Panthers focused this time around though.
