Breaking down the Cardinals-Panthers Playoff game
January 5th 2009 22:22
Ok folks I went 3 out of 4 in my NFL Playoff Predictions last week. I correctly predicted the winner in all but the Colts-Chargers game. I am back to make more predictions and playoff game break downs for week two of the NFL Playoffs here in 2009. I run a Football Website, write a sports column for a local paper and cover the Carolina Panthers for another website, so I am qualified to do this. All stats and Schedule information come from NFL.com. This article is a prediction and preview of the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers NFL Playoff Game.
Breaking down the Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers host the Arizona Cardinals in the 2nd round of the Playoffs for the 2008 season. The two teams played in week 8 of this season and the Panthers won a close one 27 to 23 in Anquan Boldin’s first game back from getting his jaw broken. And it looks like Boldin may actually miss this one with a hamstring injury.
The Carolina Panthers were the only undefeated team at home for the 2008 NFL season. DeAngelo Williams and rookie Jonathan Stewart were a pleasant surprise for the Panthers this season. The two running backs combined for almost 2,400 rushing yards and they scored 28 (18 by Williams) rushing touchdowns in 2008.
Jake Delhomme returned from Tommy John Surgery to have a pretty good season in Carolina’s ball control and play action pass offense. The Panther offense must play well against Arizona. Carolina’s defense has been on the decline and odd for a John Fox coached team, the offense has been winning the games.
Look for Julius Peppers to be a key to the Panthers/Cardinals playoff game. The Carolina defense has to get pressure on Kurt Warner and get him off his rhythm. The secondary must actually catch passes and not drop any possible interceptions that come there way. They have had a bad case of the drops this season.
Breaking down the Arizona Cardinals
Kurt Warner regressed to his old Ram playing days it seems. The old man passed for 4.583 yards and 30 touchdown passes in 2008. The Arizona Cardinals bring a high flying passing game to Carolina for their playoff game. Even if Anquan Boldin is out with the hamstring, then Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston are dangerous weapons in their own right.
Also the Arizona Cardinals rediscovered a running game with Edgerrin James who wants out of Arizona and is playing to showcase his stuff for next season. Tim Hightower also adds a big goal line presence in the running game.
The Cardinals defense is what hurts them, especially against the run where they ranked 16th in the NFL for 2008. But they played well against Michael Turner in the first round playoff game with Atlanta. Look for Arizona to put 8 men in the box and try to force Jake Delhomme to win the game by passing. They have to stop Williams and Stewart if they want to win this game.
Who will win the game?
Arizona has played badly on the East Coast all season, and the Panthers are undefeated at home. I just don’t see the Cardinals stopping DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Jake Delhomme will manage the game and make a few big throws to Steve Smith and keep Warner off the field. The Carolina Panthers will defeat the Arizona Cardinals 27 to 24.
