Chad Pennington should be in consideration for the 2008 NFL MVP

Recently the discussion has heated up a tad about the National Football League’s Most Valuable Player. The names most mentioned seem to be Kurt Warner, Eli Manning or Brett Favre. The name you may not hear about for the NFL MVP is Chad Pennington. I won’t quite say he deserves the honor but he does merit some consideration and this is why.
Chad Pennington was released by the only NFL team he had ever played for when the Jets acquired Brett Favre. He very quickly signed with Jets division rival Miami and had to learn a new offense. Hell he had to learn two new offenses or at least a new package called the Wildcat in addition to their base formations.
Pennington has done what he needs to do on a Tony Sparano/ Bill Parcels led team. He manages the game and does not turn the ball over. Going into week 12 of the 2008 NFL season here are Chad’s stats according to NFL.com.
Chad has 300 pass attempts and completed 201 of them for a very nice 67.0 pass completion percentage. Adding 2,374 yards and 8 touchdowns on a run based team with no great wide receivers is pretty good work. Chad has only thrown 5 picks and had one fumble (the Dolphins recovered it) despite running the ball 17 times and being sacked 18 times.
Last week against the Raiders, his communication with the bench broke down on the winning 4th quarter drive. Offensive coaches send the pay to the Quarterback via a radio in the player’s helmet. Instead of hearing a coach all Pennington heard was a loud annoying whine in his ear. He stayed calm and led the team down the field for a win. And remember he is new to this offense in the sense that he had very little training camp time to learn it. But hell he IS a Rhodes Scholar.
Pennington is the unsung hero of a Miami Team that has shocked the NFL with its resurgence from the worst teams in the league. The Dolphins are in the playoff hunt and it is due in no small part to Chad Pennington.
He may not put up Warner’s numbers but Kurt won’t take a hit without losing the ball like Chad will. And in the Dolphins offense 20 of 27 for 200 yards and no interceptions are MVP numbers. Not bad for a limp armed washed up Quarterback that the Jets had no more use for.
