Plaxico heading for prison? It is time for NFL players to wake up

Plaxico Burress has really done it this time, he is facing some serious jail time for his latest incident. Out Partying in Manhattan recently he accidently shot himself in the leg with a pistol. Well that is a stupid thing to do for multiple reasons.
The biggest reason Plaxico Burress is in trouble is that he didn’t have a permit to carry a handgun in New York. And according to Profootballtalk.com linebacker Antonio Pierce may also be in trouble for hiding the gun. Read their article about the situation here, including them saying the Giants are helping put Plaxico away.
New York City don’t play when it comes to handguns in their city. The charge for illegal firearms possession there is a Mandatory 3 to 5 years in prison. I don’t think this will go away like the Marvin Harrison shooting did earlier this year.
Plaxico always wanted to do his own thing and ignore the rules. Well now he has a bullet wound and will looking at some hard prison time and the end of his NFL Career if he is convicted.
NFL players can be the targets of criminals and should be able to carry a firearm to defend them selves, but it should be done legally. With the recent rash of NFL players being shot I can understand wanting to carry a weapon.
But Plaxico just wants to march to the beat of his own drum and a lifetime of having things handed to him because of his athletic ability has spoiled him. Now he will have to deal with the consequences of his actions.
But I am sure he isn’t the only NFL player carrying a gun illegally, Tank Johnson of the Cowboys has had several brushes with the law about this subject. And of course there was the above mentioned Marvin Harrison incident.
Earlier this year Harrison was involved in a dispute with somebody. Shots were fired and someone was wounded. The Gun that did the shooting just happened to be a rare type of handgun that Harrison just happened to own one of. One person was shot in the hand and a two year old boy was injured by flying glass in the melee. This took place in Philadelphia and now seems to have gone away. You can read an ESPN article on the Marvin Harrison shooting here, that was written in May of 2008. And this USA today blog reported that Harrison was getting sued over the incident.
I am pro gun but also pro law and NFL players should not be above the law. If they can get the right license then fine, pack some heat. But it is time for them to understand they are part of society and subject to laws like anyone else, ask Michael Vick about that.
