Why football is the most popular sport

June 8th 2009 14:16

The NFL is the most popular sport in the United States by far. To see some stats on that look at this Harris Poll information on popular sports. Baseball is called America's Past Time, but stress past on that one. Pro football is what we enjoy watching in the country and the Super Bowl is a huge event every year.

I listen to sports radio on WFNZ out of Charlotte North Carolina, and football is what they talk about most. Even during the off season they will jump at any chance to discuss the NFL with their listeners. . This article will attempt to explain why pro football is the most popular sport in America.

A big reason the pro football is so popular is that people love to gamble on sports. And football is a great sport to gamble on because the games all take place within 2 days (except the Thursday games) which makes your bets easier to keep up with. And the NFL is nice enough to provide an injury report to help gamblers set the line for betting.

Another cause of the NFL's popularity is that it is simply a better product to watch. Football is just a great sport to watch on television. Face it baseball is meant to be enjoyed in person. It is boring on television and the whole steroid scandal has really cheapened the game. And the fact that strikes have played a bigger part in baseball than football has really hurt them. I hope the NFL understands this and gets a new agreement signed soon with the player's union to avoid a pro football strike.

The NBA probably has the best athletes in America but it is like watching a video game. All offense and no defense make for a high scoring but somewhat annoying game. Some fans DO like to see defense in any sport.

Another thing is that the NBA and Pro Baseball have so many games that they dilute themselves. The NFL has 16 regular season games and then the playoffs, if anything they need two more regular season games and to drop two preseason games.

If the NFL can avoid a work stoppage and get the new collective bargaining agreement signed, they can continue to be the most popular sport in America. Young stars like Eli Manning, Adrian Peterson and Larry Fitzgerald can help keep the fans interested in pro football.

Another thing about the NFL--good or bad, during the play-offs it's one game--win or lose! None of that best of...stuff!

Another reason is the length of season.

Baseball 162 games? NBA 82 games? NHL 82? C'mon. Lose a game on Tuesday? Big deal, win tomorrow. In the NFL when you play 1 game per week - and only 16 times at that - it makes every game count.

Not to mention that in the NHL over half the teams make the playoffs - same with NBA. L-A-M-E. Seriously, what is the point of a season if everyone makes the playoffs?

Also, the NFL - or American football in general - is only truly played in America. Whereas, soccer, baseball, basketball, hockey etc - much more of an international flavor involved.
