Rams 2009 free agent moves
April 9th 2009 21:34
The St. Louis Rams are coming off a disappointing 2008 NFL season but seem to be trying to improve. This article will detail their 2009 free agent moves up to April 6th which is when this is being written. I will also cover the St. Louis Rams team needs for improving on their 2008 record of 2-14. Any stats mentioned and all free agent news comes from NFL.com. New coach Steve Spagnuolo (former Giants defensive coordinator) has his work cut out for him. Luckily the Rams play in the horrible NFC West which means they could win the division in 2009.
St. Louis Rams free agent moves
The Rams have been fairly active in player moves so far in 2009. Gone are long time team members Torry Holt and Orlando Pace, two of the best Rams of all time. The Arizona Cardinals signed tight end Anthony Brecht (released by Rams) and fullback Dan Kreider (free agent) so they have to be replaced. Orlando Pace signed with the Chicago Bears, Holt has no team at the time of this writing.
Centers Nick Leckey and Brett Romberg signed with New Orleans and Atlanta respectively. Two former Kansas City Chiefs, Trent Green and Dante Hall won’t be returning to the St. Louis Rams. Wide Receiver Drew Bennett, SS Corey Chavous, and running back Sam Gaddo have also been released from the team.
The Rams have not been major players thus far when it comes to signing talent, just getting rid of it. Former Baltimore Raven quarterback Kyle Boller was signed to backup Mark Bulger. Boller brings center Jason Brown over from the Ravens with him. Two safeties come over from the Giants, Craig Dahl and James Butler. The Rams also picked up fullback Michael Karney when the Saints released him earlier this year.

Picking up Boller addressed a major need in getting a experienced but not ancient backup for Mark Bulger. Boller may play well if he gets a chance because he won’t be under pressure as he was in Baltimore as a bust.
The Rams need to replace Pace and Holt and will address that in the 2009 NFL draft. Look for them to take an offensive lineman with their first pick. Wide receivers are deep in this draft and that will be taken care of as well.
The Rams also need help at linebacker and cornerback which would help their defense quite a bit. I would not be shocked to see the Rams trade down their 2nd overall selection to the Broncos. Denver could trade up to draft Mark Sanchez and give the Rams more picks to fill holes.
