Breakdown of the Dolphins/Ravens game
December 29th 2008 23:41
The Baltimore Ravens like the Falcons have a rookie Head Coach and Quarterback in John Harbaugh and Joe Flacco respectively. And Flacco has played well despite being a rookie with few receiving threats on his team. Due to injures limiting Tailback Willis McGahee the Ravens were led in rushing by Fullback Le’Ron McClain who had a monster year. McClain brought the Fullback back to the NFL with 902 yards and 10 touchdowns. Somewhere Mike Alstott is smiling about those numbers.
But make no mistake about it, the Baltimore Ravens are a defensive team and bring a nasty group to Miami. They will hit you so hard your Mama will fall off the couch at home. Led by ageless Ray Lewis and ball hawk Ed Reed this unit brings the nasty. They rank no lower than 3rd in any major defensive team category for the 2008 NFL Season.
The Miami Dolphins are probably even more of a surprise Playoff Team than the Atlanta Falcons are. The Dolphins went 1-15 last season and traded their best player in Jason Taylor. Bill Parcells took over as head of Football Operations and brought in former Dallas Assistant Coach Tony Sparano to be the Dolphins Coach. The Dolphins then picked up former Jet Chad Pennington off the scrap heap to be their starting Quarterback. Ronnie Brown had a breakout season at Running back and the Dolphins reintroduced the Single Wing (calling it the Wildcat) offense to the NFL.
The Dolphins defense is ranked ninth in the NFL in points allowed for 2008 and 10th in Rushing Defense. Miami plays a solid if not spectacular defense that keeps them in most games.
Look for the Ravens to keep their powerful rushing game going and rely on their defense to contain the Dolphins. The Dolphins will try to confuse rookie Quarterback Joe Flacco. But I don’t think the passing game will be much of a factor for any team. The Ravens will swarm the Wildcat if it is used and win the game. Baltimore will win a defensive battle in the first round of the playoffs, winning 17 to 10 over the Dolphins.
