Running backs in the 2009 nfl draft
February 24th 2009 22:32
There is a decent but not great crop of running backs available in the 2009 NFL draft. With more pro football teams going to a multi back rotation the position should get plenty of attention this year. This article will rank the best running backs in the 2009 NFL draft. Please check my profile for more articles including ranking 2009 free agents and the best in the NFL draft.
1 Chris Wells JR Ohio State
Wells is no stranger to attention as he was a highly sought after recruit after his high school career was over. At 6ft 1 and 235 pounds, Wells is big enough to take as well as dish out punishment. He didn’t get the opportunity to catch many passes at Ohio State and he is a injury concern. But Wells is too good to pass up on and may be the first back chosen in the 2009 NFL Draft.
2 Knowshon Moreno SO Georgia
Moreno may be taken over Wells due to Chris’s injury past. Moreno only played 2 seasons at Georgia but had great ones. Moreno has speed and the ability to make tacklers miss. An added bonus is his pass catching ability.
3 LeSean McCoy SO Pittsburgh
McCoy is another redshirt sophomore coming into the 2009 NFL draft at running back. At 5ft 11 and a little over 200 pounds, McCoy won’t be able to take the pounding of a every down back. However he is tough for his size and can make plays running or receiving out of the backfield.
4 James Davis SR Clemson
Sharing time in the backfield kept Davis from having huge stats in the backfield at Clemson. Davis should fit in well with a running back rotation and could turn out to be a huge sleeper pick if he falls in the draft.
5 Donald Brown JR UCONN
Donald Brown had a nice career at UCONN and has shown a nose for the end zone even when he wasn’t a starter earlier in his time there. Probably too small to be a feature back at the next level but could play for somebody.
6 Shonn Greene JR Iowa
Greene has intelligence questions or would probably be higher in the running back rankings for the 2009 NFL draft. Greene really only had one big season but he showed some potential there. Greene is short and stout and hard to bring down once he gets a head of steam up.
7 Javon Ringer SR Michigan State
At 5ft 9 Ringer reminds me of a taller Darren Sproles and could take on a similar role. He just does not have the speed of Sproles but he could surprise some people in the pro game.
8 Mike Goodson JR Texas A&M
One of the faster backs in the 2009 NFL draft with a 4.45 40 yard dash time, he could possibly make some plays in the NFL. An excellent receiver he could actually see some time at that spot as well, since he is under 200 pounds.
9 Andre Brown SR North Carolina State
Brown has decent size at 6ft even and over 220 pounds, and showed the ability to catch the ball as well as run it at NC State.
10 Marlon Lucky SR Nebraska
Lucky has what some teams crave at the position, versatility. He has great receiving skills and can return kicks. Off the field issues have dropped his position in my ranking of the 2009 draft running back’s list.
