Ch-Ch-Changes
March 26th 2009 22:17
The old saying goes, "The more things change, the more they stay the same. Just when you sit back for a season of NFL action and that first infraction is called, you shout incredulously at the TV as the referee explains what happened.
It's going to be the same this year because there have been (so far) 11 rule changes. Will it make the game better? Safer? You be the judge.
There will be a link at the end of this post to let you in on all the changes but there's one biggie we ought to focus on----Loose balls that may have been the result of a fumble or an incomplete pass will be subject to video review.
Maybe if this rule had been in effect last season referee Ed Hochuli may have stayed out of the doghouse with NFL fans.
Way back in September of 2008, Denver quarterback Jay Cutler fumbled, or dropped (depending on which team you wanted to win) the ball.
Unfortunately, there was no instant replay available so the play had to stand as it was called--an incomplete forward pass. Ed Hochuli admitted to Charger coach Norv Turner that he blew it. None the less, the play had to stand as called.
Fortunately, for Charger fans, things righted themselves by the end of the season and the better team won the division. However, this rule change may stop a lot of controversy.

So true! Witness the BCS. They still can't admit that it didn't work and people are still miffed about the outcome each year.
