Rex Ryan named Jets Coach
January 19th 2009 15:50
Rex Ryan has agreed to a 4 year deal to become the head coach of the New York Jets, replacing Eric Mangini who was fired after the 2008 season. Ryan was the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens before taking the Jets job.
Ryan coaches a very physical and playmaking defense when he has the right players. The 2008 Baltimore Ravens finished in the top 5 in every major defensive category in the NFL. The 2008 Jets had an average defense at best but they did finish 7th in rushing defense.
While there is no Ed Reed, Ray Lewis (for now) or Bart Scott on the Jets, there are some decent defensive players to build on. Eric Barton and Calvin Pace are solid linebackers and Kerry Rhodes is a good safety. Run stuffer defensive tackle Kris Jenkins could start for most NFL teams.
Rex Ryan may be best known for being the son of former Eagles and Cardinals coach Buddy Ryan. Buddy Ryan invented the 46 defense that the Chicago Bears used to win their only Super Bowl. However Ryan is best remembered when as a defensive coordinator with the Oilers, he punched offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride during a game. Rex Ryan is the brother of Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.
Ryan takes over the Jets from fired coach Eric Mangini who was thrown under the bus for the Brett Favre fiasco and for not making the playoffs. When the prima donna Favre didn’t work out somebody had to take the fall. It is widely suspected that Favre will retire again or try to get on a new team for 2009.
I think Ryan will turn the Jets around and make their defense a force in the NFL within two years. Having Thomas Jones and Leon Washington on offense will be a help to whatever quarterback Rex Ryan goes with in 2009. There is no indication of who will be on the assistant coaching staff other than Brian Shottenheimer will be staying on as offensive coordinator. Shottenheimer had interviewed for the Jets head coaching position before Ryan got the gig. I will be interested in seeing if Rob Ryan is added to the defensive coaching staff on the Jets in 2009.
Rex Ryan being named the New York Jets new head coach is a solid move. Being an East Coast team with bad winters, a defensive minded coach is a plus. They tend to favor a good running game which plays well in last season and playoff games in cold weather.
