Redskins 2009 free agent moves

June 8th 2009 12:24
The Washington Redskins started last season playing well until injuries to the offensive line derailed their season. This article will cover the Washington Redskins free agent moves up until April 6th 2009, the date this was written. I will also include what the team needs are to improve on their 2008 record and possibly make the NFL playoffs. The Redskins made a big slash early in free agency then tapered off a little due to salary cap reasons.

They recently tried to trade for Jay Cutler and are in talks with Byron Leftwich as I write this article. For some reason Jason Campbell has fallen out of favor with management and or Coach Jim Zorn. All information about the Washington Redskins 2009 free agent moves come from NFL.com.

Signing Albert Haynesworth was huge for the Skins and so was his contract. When he feels like it Haynesworth is a force at defensive tackle with the ability to stuff the run and get sacks on the quarterback.

Derrick Dockery an offensive guard released by the Buffalo Bills was picked up to help the Skins aging offensive line. Punter Dirk Johnson comes over from NFC champion Arizona to join Washington. David Rayner comes over from the Bengals to be the kicker for the Skins. Journeyman defensive end Renaldo Wynn signed as well, last season he played for the Giants.

Defensive End Demetric Evans signed a free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Corner Shawn Springs was released when DeAngelo Hall was resigned. Springs joined the New England Patriots shortly after his release.

Running back Shaun Alexander, defensive end Jason Taylor, linebacker Matthew Sinclair and linebacker Marcus Washington were all released by the Redskins. Jason Taylor is thought to be headed back to Miami where he played before.

Washington Redskins 2009 Team Needs

The Skins need a pass rushing defensive end in the worst way since Jason Taylor didn’t work out. This would help Haynesworth who would also help the DE as well. A young cornerback or two that can also help on special teams would be nice as well.

But the biggest 2009 need for the Redskins is adding some offensive line help. Campbell played well when he had time to pass. Better lineman would also help Clinton Portis who I feel is the most underrated running back in pro football. A good hard running between the tackles power back would also help this team immensely.
