Sports Yapp may be giving WFNZ some competition in the Charlotte sports radio market. I listen to both online and on the radio in my quest for NFL content on sports radio in Charlotte.
I have to say that for right now I like WFNZ better as you can see by this article about them. But Sports Yapp is a close second as I really like their main man, Bryce Johnson who is actually a former WFNZ intern.
I was slightly shocked to hear longtime WFNZ caller “Jersey Mike” breaking down the best sports families on Sports Yapp today. “Jersey Mike and Jersey Mike Jr.” are known for their love of anything New Jersey or Rutgers related on WFNZ.
Bryce Johnson and Sports Yapp do cover all the sports but I feel WFNZ pays too much attention to the NBA. Recently in the middle of the NBA playoffs WFNZ’s Mark Packer let the audience decide the topic on ‘Primetime with the Packman” and it was all football.
Also recently I went on air as a caller to the Frank and Buck show and asked them would they rather be a NFL Hall of Fame player or have a Super Bowl ring. Frank Garcia wanted the Hall of Fame and Brenston Buckner wanted the Super Bowl Ring. But the thing is WFNZ listeners jumped all over this and Frank and Buck ran with it for over an hour.
If Sports Yapp really wants to compete with WFNZ then they will do more stuff about the NFL. As you can see here the NFL is the most popular sport and that is what a majority of sports radio listeners want to hear about.
According to at least one source which you can see here, Sports Yapp is ahead of WFNZ in the ratings. But that site is people rating and not official ratings for the two Charlotte Sports radio stations.
