What is wrong with the Steelers?

The Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl last season then promptly fell flat on their face in 2009. Coach Tomlin promised to unleash Hell on the NFL but apparently his version of Hell is to lose to the Oakland Raiders. So what is wrong with the Pittsburgh Steelers? Carry on fair reader and learn what has happened to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2009 NFL season.
First of all when you win a Super Bowl everyone gives you their best shot the next season. Teams want to be able to say they knocked off the champions and bring their A game.
Another thing wrong with the Pittsburgh Steelers is the emergence of the Cincinnati Bengals as a decent team that swept the Steelers and Ravens in 2009. The Steelers just couldn’t beat the Bengals in 2009 and this hurt them a lot.
The Steelers offensive line is their biggest problem as it was last year. The Steelers have abandoned their bread and butter running attack in most games in part due to lack of blocking. Rashard Mendenhall has had a decent season but Willie Parker just disappeared. The lack of a running game has led to the Steelers not being able to put teams away and grind out the clock.
Poor offensive line play has also had Ben Roethlisberger banged up and hit a lot this season. He is actually having a nice season in 2009 and the passing game is improving, when he has time to throw the ball.
The Steelers defense is still good but no longer great and they have a very average secondary. Troy Palamalu missed several games due to injury and that didn’t help the Steelers defense in 2009. The Steelers defense can still stop the run as well as anyone in the NFL though.
The Steelers loss to the Raiders dropped them to 6-6 and probably out of the 2009 NFL playoff hunt. But the nucleus is there to become a playoff contender in 2010. They will have a higher draft pick than they are used to for one thing.
The Steelers need to add more offensive linemen in free agency and the draft before the 2010 NFL season. They also need defensive backs, most notably at cornerback to help shore up an average pass defense. I think Willie Parker will be gone in 2010 so the Steelers need a running back to help Rashard Mendenhall.
