Steve Smith calls out Mike Florio
May 8th 2010 02:11
Panther’s wide receiver Steve Smith called out Profootballtalk.com’s Mike Florio today on WFNZ out of Charlotte North Carolina. For those not in the know Profootballtalk.com is an excellent Web site dedicated to NFL rumors and news. I visit the site several times per day
Florio printed an article claiming an unnamed source said Steve Smith called rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen a punk and that several Carolina wide receivers and one tight end were mad at Clausen for yelling at them.
Steve Smith blew up at this accusation and called WFNZ’s the Mac Attack with Chris McClain and Jim Celania. To sum up the interview Smith said Florio was a liar and pointed out that he makes more money than Florio. I am an avid fan of WFNZ and had interviewed Mac from this show, last year, which you can read here.
On the Mac Attack Charlotte Observer and Rock Hill Herald Panther’s reporter Darin Gantt called in. He said he tended to believe Steve Smith and (Paraphrasing here) that his sources as a newspaper reporter were better than Florio’s. On a side note I went to high school with Gantt. I tend to believe Darin but possibly because I want to be him when I grow up. If I had Gantt’s drive, intelligence, writing ability and contacts then I could cover the Panther’s too lol.
During the day on WFNZ whether Steve Smith called Clausen a punk was discussed on all the shows. The Mac Attack crew sat the fence as they like Profootballtalk.com and talk to Florio on air on Wednesdays. They also like Steve Smith and don’t want to lose any possible future interviews with him.
Former Panther Brenston Buckner alluded to Smith acting like a punk in his past such as when he sucker punched Ken Lucas last year. Buckner hosts the Frank and Buck show with former Panther Frank Garcia. Garcia was playing golf at a WFNZ event so Buck was on air with Brett Jensen. Jensen indicated that he had written for the Charlotte Observer and that their sources were not that great and Gantt was full of crap. Then Buckner said that many newspapers in NFL cities catered to the team for fear of losing access.
My own take on this just from listening to WFNZ and having an opinion on Steve Smith is that this much ado about nothing. Smith is one of my favorite players in Carolina and I don’t care who he calls a punk, as long as he keeps playing as well as he has in the past.
