Breaking down the Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals have shocked the sports world and are headed to Super Bowl 43 in Tampa Florida. Despite a not so great 2008 regular season record of 9-7 they won the creampuff NFC West division. Then the Arizona Cardinals won 3 upset victories, over Atlanta, Carolina and finally the Philadelphia Eagles to advance to the Super Bowl. Kurt Warner has 770 passing yards with 8 touchdown passes and only 2 interceptions in the 2008 postseason.
Kurt Warner has had one hell of a season in the Cardinals high octane passing attack. Larry Fitzgerald is probably the best wide receiver in the NFL and Anquan Boldin may be the toughest, the way he plays injured. However he was showing his ass in the Eagle game by screaming at his offensive coordinator. More on that can be found at ProFootballtalk.com.
. Edgerrin James has rejuvenated his NFL career after being benched earlier in the season. James and rookie Tim Hightower give Arizona just enough of a running game to help take pressure off of Warner.
The Arizona Cardinals defenses has been their Achilles Heel this season but have improved their play during the post season. Karlos Dansby is a sure tackler and probably their best defensive player. Breaking down Super Bowl 43, it looks like the Cardinals may lose the game because of poor defense. But they seem to rise to big games and can force the occasional turnover.
To win Super Bowl 43 the Cardinals need to do what they do best. Protect Kurt Warner and give him time to make his reads. Be patient and wait for Fitzgerald or Boldin to get open and make the big play. If the Cardinals can avoid turnovers then they have a legitimate chance to win the big game.
Keys to the Cardinals beating the Steelers in Super Bowl 43
Arizona has to at least try to establish a running game with Tim Hightower and Edgerrin James. Any effort to run the ball could slow down a murderous pass rush by the Steelers. Kurt Warner has to hit Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin ( if he is over his pout) on deep passes. Arizona won’t make long drives against this defense so they must make some big plays and avoid turnovers. On defense they need to stop the Steelers running game and force Big Ben to beat them with the passing game.
Breaking down the Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburg Steelers are appearing in their 7th Super Bowl, their record of 5-1 in the big game is quite impressive. This year’s team is a reminder of past Pittsburgh teams in that their defense got them here.
Ben Roethlisberger is about the toughest quarterback I have seen other than Brett Favre. He has taken a beating all season due to an average at best offensive line. Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes and Heath Miller are decent receivers in the Steelers passing game.
But offense for the Pittsburgh Steelers begins with the running game. “Fast” Willie Parker is the key, after fighting injuries he is back and looking fresh. He didn’t have a great AFC Championship game against the Ravens but what running back does? Mewelde Moore has been a very good backup to Parker and I look for him to get some carries in Super Bowl 43 in Tampa.
Make no mistake about though defense is what the Steelers are all about. Future NFL Hall of Fame safety Troy Palamalu is playing at an amazing level in the post season. James Harrison is having an outstanding year at linebacker as well.
The Steelers defense according to NFL.com was ranked 1st in points allowed, total yards allowed, and passing yards allowed in the 2008 season. They were ranked 2nd in rushing yards allowed. This defense is a beast to move the ball on and sustained drives are rare against them.
Keys to the Steelers beating the Cardinals in Super Bowl 43
Pittsburgh needs to do what they do best. Getting Willie Parker and Moore into the game early is a must. They need to grind the clock and keep the ball out of Kurt Warner’s hands as much as possible. On defense they need to pressure Warner and hit him. He has been known to fumble and the Steelers need to lay hands on him and try to get him rattled.
Prediction of the winner of Super Bowl 43
The Pittsburgh Steelers defense is just too good for Warner’s lack of a running game to overcome. I believe the linebackers of the Steelers will get to Kurt and cause at least two turnovers. Willie Parker will probably get about 130 yards against the Cardinals defense and win the Super Bowl MVP award. Pittsburgh will defeat the Cardinals in Super Bowl 43, 28 to 17.
