The NFL lacks quality quarterbacks

June 6th 2010 18:09
The quarterback shortage in the NFL has never been so apparent. The New Orleans Saints are trying to sign Patrick Ramsey to back up superstar Drew Brees. This after failing to sign Jake Delhomme and Mark Brunell, one bum and one ancient quarterback.

We see old quarterbacks hanging around forever just because they took some snaps in the past. Teams sign these veteran guys and prey that their starter does not go down. Remember Brad Johnson struggling and embarrassing himself when Tony Romo was hurt a couple of years ago?

There are too many teams and not enough good quarterbacks in the NFL. I think the league needs to get serious about a real developmental league. I think each team should have a minor league team ala baseball. They could then teach their system to their minor league players and see who develops into the NFL.

One problem with this would be the cost, but football is football and people will pay to watch it. NFL network could cover the games and get the players some exposure and also give the NFL some programming.

The other problem would be the short average careers of football players. If a football player has to develop for two or three years then he comes into the NFL at 24-25 years old. I would say let younger players into this developmental league, maybe 20 year olds or 19 year olds.

The NFL relies too much on college football to be the league’s developmental system. This is really hurting the quarterback position with college teams starting to rely more and more on gimmick offenses. Read here to see how those gimmick offenses can hurt a college quarterback’s prospects in the NFL. Click this link to see just how important a franchise quarterback is in the NFL.

I agree entirely. Too many teams and not enough quarterbacks.

I agree with the idea of a developmental league entirely. The NFL really, really needs it. I think there are enough elite quarterbacks, however there is a lack of depth that I see. It isn't dire, but we don't need to see Brad Johnson playing for Romo as you stated. Very good, this is a star post.

Well, most players out of college by the time they're drafted are 21~23, so 2 or 3 years would make them 23~26 and they usually last until 32~34. I wouldn't say we need a developmental league, since that would cut out of college and it wouldn't be the same as playing the players as good as the players in NFL, since if they were that good already, they'd already be in the NFL and not the developmental league. There's really not that many things you can do to increase the amount of great quarterbacks except having the young ones tutored, attend camps with great quarterbacks hosting them, going to college and getting better, and let them experience and get better.
