Who the Hell is Tyler Thigpen- And what the Chiefs need
September 19th 2008 23:12
Who the hell is Tyler Thigpen? Was the question I asked myself when I found out he would be starting quarterback for my favorite NFL team, the Kansas City Chiefs. Well apparently he was the first quarterback for Coastal Carolina, a school about 5 hours away from me, located near Myrtle Beach S.C.
According to the Chiefs on Tyler Thigpen, he is 6 ft 1 inches tall and weighs 225 pounds. He was picked in the 7th and final round of the 2007 draft by the Minnesota Vikings. When they later released Thigpen, the Chiefs signed him.
The Chiefs site also lists his college stats from Coastal Carolina. Threw for 6,598 yards and 53 touchdowns and had 25 interceptions. Added 1,626 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns on the ground as well. It also states that Tyler Thigpen was the first player from Coastal Carolina to be drafted by an NFL team.
An injury to Brody Coyle let to Damon Huard taking the top spot. The plan was for Huard and Thigpen to share time. Huard went down as well and gave the youngster more playing time than expected. Now the chiefs are going with him as the starter.
This is a good idea as the Chiefs are clearly in rebuild mode already. I think they should give all the young players a chance to play. The Chiefs need a new coaching staff and probably a new general manager or at least new scouts. I hope they make a run at Bill Cowher in the off season, he has a history with the chiefs as their defensive coordinator. Herm Edwards is a nice guy who isn’t a head coach. When the damn New York Jets don’t want a coach, you know he sucks
