UNCC now will have football

November 13th 2008 23:17
After years of requests the University of North Carolina Charlotte sat down to consider adding football to their sports. UNCC has long been known as a great basketball school in North Carolina. But alumni and Charlotte sports fans alike have long wanted football added to the school.

Well now UNCC has indeed added college football to the Queen City of Charlotte. Expecting to have 35,000 students by 2020, the school finally decided it is big enough. In September UNCC set a goal of 5,000 Seat Licenses be sold in 6 months. 80% of that goal has been met so the school has went ahead with the announcement.

According to the college’s website over $40 million will have to be raised in addition to $5 million expected to be raised by seat licenses. They will have to build facilities for football and start on building a stadium.

It is possible that the UNCC 49er football team will play at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte either permanently or more likely until a new stadium is constructed. And a 12,000 seat expandable stadium could be built on campus according to The News&Observer.

I think this is a great idea for the college and the Queen City. A college football team in the city will be good for the area. But I urge the fans to be patient and not expect the same amount of success as the basketball program, at least not quickly.

Decent facilities have to be built to aid in recruiting plus a coaching and scouting staff have to be put together. Finding a good coach will be the key to any early success and more importantly perhaps, one that can recruit football players to UNCC.

The Charlotte area does have some high school football talent and some great teams to recruit from. UNCC would hope to find good players not recruited by the University of North Carolina or any of the big schools. They would also be competing for talent with Appalachian State (2 ˝ hours from Charlotte) who knocked off Michigan in 2007 in one of the biggest upsets in college football history.

But now some of the alumni of the school have what they have been begging for, for years. No longer will they all have to pull for another college’s football program. They will have their own UNCC 49er’s football team to support. Congratulations to all of you who worked so hard to reach this goal.
