Vick is an Eagle!
August 14th 2009 22:32
Michael Vick finally has signed with an NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles. As you can see in this article I really thought he would be a Washington Redskin, but said here that Vince Young would fit in well in Philly, so I was close lol.
Everyone on the sports radio station I listen to, which is wfnz out of Charlotte called in with an opinion today on Vick. The vast majority of listeners supported Vick getting a 2nd chance in the NFL after imprisonment for gambling and dog fighting. Some of the callers felt the need to point out that racism kept Vick from a team until now. I do not feel that is the case.
I think Michael Vick needed the right team and management to handle the negativity that some will display towards him. Vick and the Eagles are a nice fit with Donovan McNabb at least publicly supporting Michael Vick. Hard core Eagles football fans will take little note of PETA protests, and may just wade in and kick the crap out of them! Don’t put too much faith in McNabb really being in love with Vick’s signing. The Eagles already drafted a quarterback of the future in Kevil Kolb last season.
People want to see Michael Vick in some kind of wildcat formation, or even switch to wide receiver. Moving Vick to another position full time would be foolish at his age. He is a quarterback plain and simple and has been in a similar west coast offense to what Philadelphia runs.
I would love to see Vick in a wildcat formation just to see him run with the ball again. I wonder how much he has left in the tank after missing two years of football while in prison.
Nobody is talking about this aspect of Michael Vick joining the Eagles. Donovan McNabb has not signed a long term deal with the team and will be a free agent after 2010. I have long suspected that McNabb wants out of the city of brotherly love. If Michael Vick proves he can play the position look for McNabb to be released or traded after the 2009 NFL season. McNabb was benched briefly in 2008 and the Eagles may not be in love with him anymore. I would not be shocked to see Michael Vick as the starting Philadelphia Eagles quarterback in 2010.
Michael Vick can keep a lower profile as a backup to an established quarterback like McNabb. Barring injury to Donovan, I doubt Vick will even play much in 2009. But injury to backup quarterback Kolb made it easier to sign Vick to start with.
