I already wrote why the Panthers should draft Cam Newton on this site. Now here are some reasons why the Panthers should NOT draft Cam Newton with the number one pick in the 2011 NFL draft.
The team was gutted to lose but save money, I think the Panthers should go that route one more year to get to draft Andrew Luck if he comes out. No matter what the 2012 quarterback prospects are better than this year. The Panthers should play Jimmy Clausen one more year to see if he develops ( he won’t) and go for defense in this draft.
Drafting Patrick Peterson with the number one pick is the route the Panthers should take. At worst he will probably be a pro bowl safety and punt returner, at best a shut down corner for the next 10 years.
Another reason not to draft Cam Newton with the number one pick is the gimmick offense he came from. If Cam Newton is a successful NFL quarterback after running a run based spread offense in college, he will be the first.
Cam Newton’s deer in the headlights look when Jon Gruden asked him to call a play is typical of college spread quarterbacks. The learning curve is too big for most guys. Cam apparently cheating in college indicates he is lazy or dumb or both. I tend to think he is lazy which won’t help him in the NFL.
The Panthers offense is going to be similar to the Chargers, lots of timing passes and running the ball. Cam will be constricted in that offense and won’t be turned lose to use his athletic ability, he is not a good fit here.
Still I think the Panthers should not draft Cam Newton more to get Peterson than to avoid Newton. Feel free to call me names in the comments, I am a big boy and can take it.
