Bucs trade for Winslow!

In somewhat of a surprising move the Cleveland Browns have traded Kellen Winslow Jr. to Tampa Bay Buccaneers for undisclosed draft picks according to NFL.com. This ends a controversial few seasons with the Browns for the talented tight end.
Winslow missed two seasons due to injuries, one of which was from a motorcycle accident where he was acting foolish. When healthy he has performed well for the Browns despite being on such a bad team. Winslow among others feuded with former Browns general manager Phil Savage.
When Kellen Winslow Jr. first hit the NFL he was thought to be, well the next Kellen Winslow! His father is NFL hall of fame tight end Kellen Winslow Sr. of the “Air Coryell” days of the San Diego Chargers. Injuries and a bad team have limited his ability to shine as bright as his father did. According to profootballreference.com Winslow Jr. has caught 219 passes for 2,459 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Cleveland Browns in 44 games.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are way below the salary cap after cutting some surprising names from their roster earlier this week. They went after Winslow mostly to attack the Carolina Panthers, who have been prone to tight ends lighting them up. On a side note the Atlanta Falcons have the same idea. They signed from free agency, former Philadelphia Eagle tight end L.J. Smith, addressing one of their pressing needs. This will also be having me update my mock draft once again.
If new Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator installs the cover 2 defense he used in Indianapolis, Winslow will become even more important to the Bucs. The way to attack the cover 2 is by working in the middle of the field. Tampa will more than likely have a young quarterback in 2009 as well. Young quarterbacks love to throw to safety valve players like tight ends and running backs.
Players like Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, Jason Whitten and even Algie Crumpler a few years ago have brought the tight end position back into NFL importance. Now every team wants that big target working the seams in zone defenses. Often former college basketball players, athletic big tight ends cause mismatch problems with most defenses. Kellen Winslow Sr., Mike Ditka, Ozzie Newsome and John Mackey were some earlier NFL superstar tight ends.
I think the change of scenery will do Kellen Winslow Jr. some good and returning to the state where he played college football (at Miami) probably isn’t hurting his feelings. If he can stay healthy Winslow will prove to be a wise trade for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
